DBT Affirmations are mantras or phrases that help strengthen your self-confidence and self-love.
I recommend you pick a few that touch your heart and set some time to repeat them regularly.
You can do this when you’re calm. I find it works best when you do this.
But if you’re used to doing it when you’re calm, you can also use these when you’re in a distressing situation to calm down and relieve some anxiety.
This exercise might be a bit strange to begin with because you might not be used to kindly treating yourself.
Remember that you don’t have to believe in all of this at first. For the most part, I find that the belief comes after the practice.
You mightn’t feel that what you’re saying about yourself is true, but your feelings and thoughts about this will change over time. So have a go. It takes practice.
If you’ve practised this and it really isn’t working for you that’s fine. At least you’ve tried.
Sometimes, skills don’t always work. At least you’ve tried and practiced and you can come to the conclusion that it’s not for you.
